Fast ForWord is a family of computer programmes which develop auditory processing and language skills. The training is presented as games which train recognition of the acoustic building blocks of speech and develop faster, accurate processing of language. They have vibrant animation and cheerful jingles which act as rewards together with tokens that parents or teachers convert into more concrete rewards in line with the student’s interests.
There are currently a series of 10 modules. Some students need only do the auditory training ones (2 for 5-11 year olds, 2 for those over 12 years old) whilst those with additional language difficulties may benefit from the Reading series as well.
Individualised
Each child using the Fast ForWord programme is placed at the right starting level based on the therapist’s recommendation, then follows a differentiated learning path that adapts with every click of the mouse. Along with the guidance from the LTR therapists, this ensures that each participant gets the individualised instruction that will help them to get the maximum benefit from the programme.
Easy-to-Use
The online Fast ForWord program is easy to use across settings, including at home and in the classroom - anytime and anywhere there is access to the internet.
Graphs and charts show progress at a very detailed level. The results from each training session are available for the therapists at LTR to check within minutes and this allows us to respond immediately when a child needs extra support to progress.
Results
There is a large body of evidence that Fast ForWord is effective with diverse student populations including those with specific language impairment, dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorders and ESL. At Listen Talk Read we have been using it for over 10 years and the majority of our clients have made significant progress within a short time frame. Some have made dramatic gains in their attention, language skills (spoken and reading) and self-esteem.
Science
Fast ForWord has been developed by academics with an international reputation and speech and language therapists at Scientific Learning and is based on over 30 years of research.
