A 3 year old came to the clinic and while we sat playing with the toys she repeatedly pointed at them and asked “what dat?” . I named each item, but was puzzled that she kept on even after I’d named them all. Eventually the penny dropped, and I realised she was repeating what she had learnt from her parents, who, not realising she didn’t know the names of these things yet, asked her to name them. Like all children who can hear well enough, she had learnt to say just what they did in context. Once the parents realised that they needed to name objects and actions that she was interested in, and repeat a few times, she made great progress!
